Gut flora can prolong life

An international team headed by scientists from Salamanca have used the C. elegans nematode to study the effects of gut microbiota in the aging process.

A study carried out by an international team headed by researchers from Salamanca has demonstrated that gut microbiota or flora can appreciably affect the lifespan of its hosts. Using the C. elegans nematode (or roundworm), which is commonly used as a model in biomedical studies, researchers have determined that this nematode lives 50 percent less when its gut flora produces antioxidants. The study was just published in the prestigious Journal of Aging and Health, which specializes in aging.
