“International Volunteers and the Spanish Civil War: Literature, Commitment and Memory”

This is a research group that since 1998 has grown over time into a cohesive group of 12 researchers from 6 different universities. They have organized events of great media repercussion, given special courses in Master Programs on war stories, lecture and publish abundantly about writers, the international brigades and English-speaking volunteers who came to fight in the Spanish Civil War.

 

The group “International Volunteers and the Spanish Civil War: Literature, Commitment and Memory” (Los Internacionales y la Guerra Civil española: Literatura, Compromiso y Memoria)( is coordinated by Antonio R. Celada, Professor of the University of Salamanca, and among its main objectives could be mentioned: visits to archives specialized in the subject to collect documentary information about volunteers; lectures and papers at conferences and seminars for the dissemination of results; development of a definitive Directory of English-speaking Volunteers with broad historiographic deployment; and publication of critical editions in translation of novelized stories, testimonies, documents or diaries of brigadistas and journalistic material after a careful selection of headers of a broad ideological spectrum. These editions are appearing in the “Armas y Letras” Collection.
