Meeting on the social studies of science

The Institute for Science and Technology Studies (eCyT) at the University of Salamanca has organised the IV Meeting of Doctorate Students to be held this week.

The Institute for Science and Technology Studies (eCyT) at the University of Salamanca launched its IV Meeting of Doctorate Students today, which will be held through next Friday, 30 May. The event will present a series of investigations that analyse the relationship of science and technology with that of economics and society.

During the four day event, which includes on-site and virtual conferences with participants from different parts of the world, researchers will present various questions about the interaction between science and society. Some examples include the contribution of higher education to economic growth in Africa, innovation among Spanish companies, the role of professional training in science and technology systems, social networks and the scientific community, the participation of women in science in Colombia, and attitudes towards the dissemination of sciences, just to name a few of the many topics that are expected to be put forth for discussion throughout the week, as reported by DiCYT.

The meeting brings together Doctorate students in Social Sciences of Science and Technology, as well as Doctorate students in Logic and Philosophy Sciences, an interuniversity programme coordinated by the eCyT Institute of the University of Salamanca, which will include the participation of the universities of A Coruña, La Laguna, Santiago de Compostela, Valencia and Valladolid, as well as the collaboration of the Institute of Philosophy of the Higher Council of Scientific Research (CSIC).

 Training

Through these programmes, the eCyT is able to train doctors in areas such as logic and argument, the philosophy of science and language, and the social studies of science and technology, enabling them to respond to the increasing demands in analysing the role of science in contemporary culture. The study courses will present information on the operation and structure of scientific-technological systems, their management and their impact within different social, economic and political arenas.

Other objectives for doctorate students include the analysis of the relationship between language and the world around us, cognitive models and their application to artificial intelligence, problems related to communication, speech acts and pragmatics, the significance, intention and theories of mental representation, information technology, artificial intelligence or web semantics, among others.

The main professional opportunities include academic activity in institutions of higher learning, working with national or international research groups and projects in different areas of expertise, or in the business sector, communication or scientific dissemination.

Master’s

Moreover, the training offered by eCyT includes an Official Master’s in Social Studies of Science and Technology, an initiative from the University of Salamanca which also involves the University of Oviedo, the Organisation of Ibero-American States (OEI) and CIEMAT. The purpose of the Master’s is to train professionals who serve as intermediaries between science and society, specifically within the field of scientific communication in media and business, and the field of public management, which is oriented toward the management and control of research projects.
