The IPBES is an intergovernmental organization administered by the United Nations that is destined to become the principal global instrument for studying the interaction among human activity, biodiversity and ecosystem services, and from there to promote international measures and agreements for the conservation of biodiversity.

Among its objectives is to collect and disseminate scientific knowledge about biodiversity and ecosystem services, to carry out regional and global studies on biodiversity, to propose global lines of work and create alignments for the design of public policies that are responsible, sustainable, and respectful of biodiversity and ecosystems. The fifth plenary session of the IPBES is meeting in Bonn on 7-10 March in order to assess the work plan implemented in March 2014 and to establish the main lines of action as from 2018.
