Threatened forest vertebrates prefer older trees

A study carried out by the University of Salamanca reveals that old trees are good indicators of the biodiversity of vulnerable species threatened with extinction

Researchers at the University of Salamanca have compared the distribution of old trees in the province of Salamanca with data concerning the presence of threatened vertebrates living in forest habitats. They found that there is a significant correlation between the two parameters. The study indicates that it is more likely to find species such as the Spanish Imperial Eagle (Aquila adalberti), the Cinereous Vulture (Aegypus monachus), the Iberian Lynx (Lynx pardinus), the Red Kite (Milvus milvus) and several bat species in places with greater density of old trees.
