USAL researchers advise physical therapy in adults to prevent central neurological syndromes and movement disorders

The University of Salamanca is exporting its Geriatric Rehabilitation Program to Spanish cities, Portugal and Latin America and recalls the benefits of the exercise on the World Day of Physical Activity.

There is increasing scientific evidence that physical activity and therapeutic exercise are intimately related to endogenous metabolic processes that have to do with the functioning of people at all levels. Saint Thomas Aquinas already knew this in the sixteenth century: diseases of the soul can be so strong that they can produce physical illnesses and even death. Even so, it was not until 2002 that the World Health Organization declared April 6 as the World Day of Physical Activity to promote actions in this area aimed at achieving good health and well-being.
With this philosophy focused on the elderly, Professor of Physiotherapy at the University of Salamanca, José Ignacio Calvo Arenillas, launched the Geriatric Rehabilitation Program (PREGE) in collaboration with the City of Salamanca, a project of preventive physiotherapy and health care for the elderly, highly consolidated today, after 25 years, which has been exported to many cities in Spain, Portugal and Latin America. Experience has allowed USAL to carry out important research activity in the field of physical activity and cognition, fragility, oxidative capacity and sarcopenia with results “of high impact published in prestigious journals,” the Director of the program, Calvo Arenillas, told Communication University of Salamanca.
