USAL studies the Deception Island volcano to design a predictive model of the activity of these geological structures

Antonio M. Álvarez Valero is travelling  to Antarctica in the 2017-2018 campaign of the international project POSVOLDEC to determine the key magmatic factors under the active volcano of the island and improve our knowledge of the volcanic eruptions all over the planet.

Expelled from Olympus at birth, Vulcan grew up under the protection of the divinities of the ocean in the depths of a sea cave from which he made fire tongues flow when he unleashed his fury. This god of fire made the volcano that gives shape to Deception Island, in Antarctica, cry lava for the last time in 1970. Headed there is Antonio M. Álvarez Valero, a scientist of the University of Salamanca, to study the magmatic processes that took place during that eruption within the framework of the POSVOLDEC project (MINECO), coordinated by the Institute of Earth Sciences Jaume Almera (CSIC) .

The main goal of the project “POSVOLDEC. Understanding post-caldera volcanic processes in Deception Island (Antarctica): Implications for assessing potential future volcanic hazards”, of an interdisciplinary and international character, is to characterize the current state of the magmatic system that resides under Deception Island. The ultimate goal is to understand the ‘key factors’ that control volcanic processes in order to advance in the determination of the ‘patterns of operation of these geological structures in different regions of the planet,’ as Antonio M. Alvarez Valero explained to USAL Communication.
