Award ceremony for the ‘Investigate, understand and take care of water’ contest sponsored by the CIDTA centre at the University of Salamanca.

The Centre for Research and Technological Development of Water (CIDTA) at the University of Salamanca presented the awards for its first school competition ‘Investigate, understand and take care of water’ which formed part of the larger project ‘A scientific environment: Environmental dissemination and promotion of scientific vocations through the environment, an initiative co-funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology.

First place for the group category was awarded to CRA Bajo Tormes de Monleras for their work on ‘Elms: protectors of water and living purifiers’. Second place was for the Pablo Picasso de Carbajosa de la Sagrada primary school. Individual awards were given to Óscar Sánchez and Helena Moreno.

CIDTA director Manuel García Roig congratulated the teachers and encouraged them to continue their focus on understanding and creating awareness on the importance of water. “While there seems to be an abundance of water, on a global level it is actually scarce. With climate change, dry regions are moving northbound and perhaps that will force us to manage water more carefully to conserve it and protect its quality”, he stated.

The goal of this awareness programme is “to understand everything that water is useful for and appreciate it much more” said Vice President of Research and Transfer at the University of Salamanca, Juan Manuel Corchado, while speaking to the students. Representative of the Provincial Delegation of Education Juan Manuel Sánchez Conejero highlighted the work done by students and teachers.
